Role and Activities

Kim Jong-min is a journalist and scholar who covered investigative reports on Jeju 4·3 as a reporter for Jemin Ilbo and later participated as a specialist member in the government-level truth-finding process. As a member of Jemin Ilbo’s 4·3 Investigation Team, he worked with editorial director Yang Jo-hoon to advance 4·3-related investigative reporting. Since Jemin Ilbo was Jeju’s only newspaper at the time, his journalistic work played an important role in disseminating 4·3 information within the region.8

During the truth-finding movement that unfolded on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of 4·3 in 1988, Kim Jong-min played an active role. He conducted interviews with intellectuals active in Seoul and figures visiting Jeju, which he then reported in the newspaper. For example, in November 1988, when Zainichi Korean writer Kim Seok-bum visited Jeju for the first time in 43 years, Kim Jong-min conducted a significant interview, reporting it under the title “Writer of ‘Hwasan Island’ Kim Seok-bum, Who Found His Hometown After 43 Years.”9

Additionally, on November 21 that year, he reported on a cultural event centered on 4·3 through an article titled “Purification Ritual Holds Memorial for 4·3 Souls.” These articles provided an opportunity to understand 4·3 from cultural and spiritual dimensions at the 40th anniversary juncture.10 On December 26, 1988, he interviewed poet Yi San-ha, author of the epic poem “Halla Mountain,” reporting on “Poet Yi San-ha of the Epic ‘Halla Mountain’ Who Visited Jeju.”

Relationship with the 4·3 Truth Commission

After the Jeju 4·3 Special Act was enacted in January 2000, Kim Jong-min participated as a specialist member of the Jeju 4·3 Committee. During the committee’s investigation process, he contributed to setting investigation directions and writing the report by leveraging his journalistic experience and academic background. His verification abilities as a journalist were particularly utilized in victim testimony collection, on-site investigations, and historical document organization.11

Until the truth commission report was finally adopted on October 15, 2003, Kim Jong-min participated in report writing. His work “50 Years After 4·3” is an academic analysis of historical processes following the Jeju 4·3 incident and was also utilized as official records of the truth commission.12

Kim Jong-min also played a role in conveying the truth of 4·3 in the context of school education. In April 2015, he organized and provided the content and materials from his lectures for educational use, and these materials were utilized in 4·3 history learning by students in the Jeju region.13

Academic Significance

Kim Jong-min’s activities exemplify a public intellectual who combined roles as both journalist and scholar. Particularly significant is his work as a regional newspaper journalist in discovering and interviewing figures related to 4·3 before the government-level truth-finding began, contributing to academic materials accumulation and memory preservation.14

Additionally, his work serves as a case study showing how journalism and scholarship can cooperate in the early stages of truth-finding. The information and testimony collected by Jemin Ilbo’s journalists were later utilized as foundational materials for the government-level truth commission, demonstrating the multilayered character of truth-finding.
