제11연대 (第十一聯隊) / 11th Regiment

국방경비대 제11연대는 평화협상 결렬 이후 제주에 투입되어 강경 진압 노선을 실행한 부대이다. 9연대가 4·3 초기 대응과 초토화작전의 주력이었다면, 제11연대는 평화협상 실패~계엄령 선포 사이의 전환기에 강경 진압을 본격화한 부대이다.
투입과 지휘

박진경은 부임 직후 대규모 토벌작전을 개시하였다. 무장대와의 타협을 일체 배제하고 강력한 군사적 진압에 집중하였다.
박진경 암살 (1948.6.18)
박진경 연대장은 1948년 6월 18일 부하 장교에 의해 암살되었다. 이 사건은 경비대 내부의 갈등 — 제주 출신 병사들의 동요, 강경 진압에 대한 내부 반발 — 을 보여주는 사건으로 해석된다. 암살 직전인 5월 20일에는 경비대 병사 41명이 집단 탈영하여 무장대에 합류하는 사건이 발생하기도 했다.
후기 진압작전
박진경 암살 이후 제11연대는 재편되었으며, 이후 9연대가 재투입되어 송요찬의 지휘 하에 초토화작전을 전개하였다.

The 11th Regiment of the Korean Constabulary was deployed to Jeju after the collapse of the April 28 Peace Negotiation, executing a hardline suppression policy. While the 9th Regiment handled both the initial response and the scorched-earth phase, the 11th Regiment bridged the transition from negotiation to full militarization.
Command and Deployment
Deployed in May 1948, the regiment was commanded by Col. Park Jin-gyeong, a hardliner trusted by the U.S. military advisors. Park launched large-scale operations immediately upon arrival, categorically rejecting any compromise with the insurgents.
Assassination of Col. Park (June 18, 1948)
Col. Park was assassinated by subordinate officers on June 18, 1948. This event revealed deep fissures within the Constabulary — particularly the unrest among Jeju-born soldiers and internal opposition to the hardline approach. Just weeks earlier, 41 soldiers had deserted and joined the insurgents.
Following Park’s assassination, the regiment was reorganized. The 9th Regiment was subsequently redeployed under Song Yo-chan’s command to execute the scorched-earth campaign.
