대동청년단 (大同靑年團) / Daedong Youth Corps

1947년 9월 결성된 우익 청년단체로, 이청천(지청천)이 총재를 맡았다. 서북청년회과 함께 4·3 기간 제주에서 활동한 주요 우익 준군사 조직이다.
제주에서의 조직과 활동
1947년 9월, 미소공동위원회 결렬 이후 남한 전역에서 우익 청년단체 조직이 강화되던 시기에 대동청년단 제주 조직이 발족하였다. 같은 시기 서북청년회 제주 지부, 조선민족청년단(족청) 제주도단부도 설립되었다.
유해진 도지사는 광복청년회와 대동청년단의 고문을 겸임하며 우익 단체 확대를 후원하였다. 미군 CIC도 이러한 우익 강화 정책에 협력하였다.1
대동청년단은 경찰·서북청년회과 연계하여 다음 활동에 참여하였다:
- 좌익 혐의자 색출 및 연행 보조
- 5·10선거(1948) 시행을 위한 선전·경호 활동
- 민보단·향보단 등 마을 단위 통제 조직 운영 참여
- 우익 집회 동원 및 좌익 조직 와해 공작
1948년 이후
1948년 12월 이승만 정권 하에서 전국 우익 청년단체들이 대한청년단으로 통합되었다. 대동청년단은 서북청년단·조선민족청년단 등과 함께 이 통합 조직에 흡수되었으며, 이후 국민방위군 등으로 재편되었다.
서북청년단과의 비교
서북청년단이 이북 출신 월남 청년 중심의 반공 조직이었던 반면, 대동청년단은 남한 지역 기반의 우익 청년 동원 조직이었다. 서청이 직접적인 고문·처형에 관여한 사례가 집중적으로 기록된 데 비해, 대동청년단은 주로 조직 동원·선전·보조 역할을 수행한 것으로 기록되어 있다.

The Daedong Youth Corps was a right-wing youth organization established in September 1947 under the leadership of Yi Cheong-cheon (Ji Cheong-cheon). Along with the Northwest Youth League, it was a major right-wing paramilitary body active on Jeju during the 4·3 period.
Organization on Jeju
The Jeju branch was established in September 1947, during a period of intensified right-wing organizing following the collapse of the U.S.–Soviet Joint Commission. Governor Yu Hae-jin served simultaneously as advisor to both the Gwangbok Youth Association and the Daedong Youth Corps, actively sponsoring right-wing expansion with U.S. CIC cooperation.1
The Corps participated in identifying and detaining suspected leftists, supporting the May 10, 1948 election, and operating village-level control organizations (민보단, 향보단).
After 1948
In December 1948, under the Rhee administration, all right-wing youth groups were merged into the Korean Youth Corps (대한청년단). The Daedong Youth Corps was absorbed alongside the NWL and other organizations.
Unlike the NWL, which was predominantly composed of refugees from the north with a visceral anti-communist agenda, the Daedong Youth Corps was a southern-based mobilization organization. Records indicate it played primarily a support, propaganda, and organizational role rather than direct participation in torture and execution.
